Tomi Smith entered
into the doctor's room. The sight she saw almost shook her off her feet. ''Could this be a dream or something?''She thought.Tomi's Uncle on his side couldn't believe who he saw. ''Tomi, how are you? What are you doing where? How is my brother and your mum?'' Tomi couldn't utter any word. After about a minute, she finally muttered some words, '' I am fine sir''.
Tomi's uncle who turned out to be the doctor Tomi was directed to is a brother to Mr. Smith, Tomi's dad. He has been in this profession for a long time. His brother and some of his friends have tried their best to persuade him to leave the profession, such that they had quarreled and fought a number of times. Dr. Smith decided to leave the area where he lived and relocated to the outskirts of the city.
Still stunned, Dr. Smith told Tomi to have her seat which she did. He wondered what could have brought his niece to that kind of hospital. ''What could be wrong? Is this really the next person he was supposed to see?'', Dr Smith thought.
Fixing his gaze on Tomi and seeing how helpless she looked, he went to where she sat, put his hands across the chair and asked her silently, ''Tomi, what's wrong, what brings you here?''
Tomi couldn't help the tears that gushed out of her eyes. She thought of what to say, she couldn't tell him the truth, ''far from it, if he knows, it means, mum and dad are sure going to hear this. How could I? God, how could I have thought of abortion in the first place?''
These and many thoughts ran through the mind of Tomi.
''Uncle, I don't know where to start from. The truth actually is that I'm pregnant, and I'm here to get rid of it'' Tomi replied her uncle.
''Pregnant? How? When? Why?'' , Dr. Smith exclaimed. ''No, not here, I'm not going to do such for you'' He said.
''Uncle, please, just this time! I can't carry this shame. I can't carry a baby I know not the father, I cannot! I cannot carry a product of rape!!!'' Tomi yelled.
''What?You were raped? How did it happen? Do your parents know about this?'' Dr. Smith asked.
Tomi replied negatively. Dr. Smith became really confused. He felt sorry for his niece. Why on earth should this happen? He thought.
''But I can't endanger the life of my niece, what if in the process she looses her life?What would I tell her parents. Oh God, not this time'' Dr. Smith thought silently. He cast his mind back to the time he handled an abortion process for his friend's daughter and the girl lost her life.He couldn't tell the girl's parents.
He still suffered the hurt till that moment.Dr. Smith hugged his niece until tears started rolling from his eyes. He told her silently, '' Tomi, we are not going to abort this baby. C'mon, get your bag and let's get going to my place''. Dr. Smith told her niece.
