There is a common saying that goes thus: ''If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go with people''.
God has blessed everyone
with unique and peculiar qualities such that there are things that you know and can do that other people don't know and cannot do and vice-versa. As we also know that there are people we come across in life that are more exposed knowledge-wise and in experience. This is what births mentorship.
What is mentorship?
I choose to define this as a form of thorough interaction between two persons or more that involves training and leadership on one part and learning and followership on the other hand.
A mentor is one who trains, teaches and impacts the other party, the other party is known as the mentee.
There are basic things involved in mentorship that separates or differentiates it from leadership or role modeling.
*Mentorship involves direct interaction and communication: There must be a direct interaction between the two parties.
*Mentorship involves leadership and followership: We should know that leadership is not dictatorship neither is it rulership. It's involves service and it's all about service. A mentor must have an high sense of leadership and a mentee must be able to devote time to follow and submit to his/her mentor.
*Mentorship involves dedication: Both parties must be dedicated to this process.
DO I NEED TO HAVE A MENTOR?
I must say that mentorship is not compulsory but it's expedient. Like I said earlier, there are different things that birth mentorship, it could be as a result of challenges in your career, spiritual life, your social life or your business and you feel you need someone who is of a worthy character and has sailed through that aspect successfully to tutor you. It could also be that you don't want to fall into mistakes that people around you have made.
*Do I choose my mentor?
Hmmm, this is an important question. The answer to this question can be yes or no. The choice of a mentor is a decision that determines the successful sailing of your ship(life). It is indeed a delicate decision. You can choose one that will mentor you and your mentor can also be the initiator of the process, however, consent is important either way. I strongly believe however that God should be our ultimate choice-maker.
Who should be my mentor?
This and much more will be discussed in the next series. #Anticipate
