Not a lot of people come out the other end of a personal tragedy, thinking about how to help other people, but thankfully, Dr. Olamide Orekunrin has proved to be different!
Ola Orekunrin Brown, 32, is an entrepreneur, a medical doctor, a trainee pilot, and the founder of Flying Doctors, West Africa’s first indigenous air ambulance service.
After her 12-year-old sister, who was on holiday in Nigeria, died due to the lack of an air ambulance service to transport her to a hospital with the appropriate facilities, Olamide decided to return to Nigeria to create a medical emergency service, Flying Doctors Nigeria (FDN).
Speaking with Bella Naija about how the tragedy motivated her to return to Nigeria to create FDN, Olamide said:
“It was really a devastating time for me and I started thinking about whether I should be in England talking about healthcare in Africa, or I should be in Africa dealing with healthcare and trying to do something about it."

Ola currently resides in Lagos, Nigeria where she is considered a national expert on disaster medicine and pre-hospital care. Her company has been featured on various local TV and radio stations as well as the BBC and CNN.
7 years after creating FDN, the company impressively has over 20 charter aircraft, and 47 staff – 44 of whom are trained medical doctors.
5 Life Lessons from Her Story :
√ Some challenges are blessings in disguise : Don't be too overwhelmed by the problems around you such that you fail to see the blessings in them. You never can tell, they could be your next stepping stone.
√Actions speak better than words: In her words, she said she was indecisive as to whether to continue talking about healthcare in England or start dealing with the issues of healthcare. She decided to deal with it! It's good to talk about dreams, it's better to live those dreams.
√ Let passion be your driving force
√Be a solution provider rather than a problem analyst! You know how well some people can analyse problems 😂😂😂. You can talk about the problems, but talk about the solutions too, and create the solution.
